'Phishing' is an attempt by fraudsters to 'fish' for your
banking details. 'Phishing' attempts usually arrive as an email
appearing to be from your bank. Within the email you are then usually
encouraged to click on a link to an elaborate fraudulent log on page designed to
get your log-in details.
How do they get my email address?
Spiders roam the Internet gathering addresses. Lists of live email addresses are bought and swapped
between unscrupulous parties.
How do they know where I bank?
They don't - but if they send enough emails they are bound to reach
some customers.
The email says it's from mybank.com - is it?
There is a possibility that it may be a fraud. Always check with
your bank. Make sure the link and the page you have gone to looks
familiar to you. Do NOT put in your user-name/password unless you are
absolutely sure that it is safe and secure.
What should I do if I get a suspicious looking email?
If in doubt, delete it. This caution should apply to all unexpected
emails with links or attachments.
What should I do if I believe I've been a victim of 'phishing'
fraud?
You should contact your bank immediately so that they can
investigate and change your security details if necessary.
